I'm a newbie, bigtime. After the last week I feel like a total fool!

started off with a $2800 deposit to a reputable sportsbook. with a 10% bonus plus western union transfer fees my initial bankroll was $3195.

one week later, my account shows sixty cents.

I bet NFL and MLB.
I bet approximately 30% of the games on my own research and intuition.
I bet 30% with the book.
I bet 30% against the book.
I bet 10% with the pro cappers.

After all that action, maybe 50 bets, I am down to one wager for $10 that chicago loses tonight NFL.

I'm not a total idiot in real life. I am working on a master's degree, have a professional job, two car garage, rent a two bedroom duplex, etc etc.

However, in this betting game - I LOST MY SHIRT!

This loss is going to shut me down for at least a month.

Is there anyone out there more of a loser than me?

Or should I quit betting altogether?

Not very happy right now in Ohio, USA.

Wow. Sorry to hear it. Maybe you were just too "gung ho". All that dough in an account can make you feel like you have "tons 'o ' cash" and maybe make bets in a lacklustre manner. Let me put it this way..........if you only had $500 in that account, would you have bet all the same games?
It has happened to me as well and I always find that a small account balance is the best route to take. I do 95% of my gambling on the ponies and I bet in person, but when I hit a good one I usually hand the cash over to my wife and make my next bet as though I was on a tight budget. I think it makes me sharper

(I'd like to hope lol )
If my pony picks can help you, feel free to use them.

sds, thanks for your reply.

If I had a smaller bankroll, I most likely would have made fewer bets. However, the fewer bets would have been for larger amounts. They'd have been for larger amounts because I would have like to think my plays are good plays and would probably win.

Looking back on it, I see I have no money management plan nor should I have confidence in my plays. Afterall, I managed to pick losing plays overall.

At no time did I think I have "a lot of dough" to play with, it's the opposite, I felt that my initial bankroll was a liability. In fact, the bankroll was not money I can afford to lose.

I suppose I was chasing from the very beginning. I was chasing before the first wager was even decided.

thanks for the input, sds.

It will take me at least 4 to 5 weeks to make money through my regular 9 to 5 work to cover the losses I incurred from betting over the last week. I am still wanting to deposit more money into my account and bet again, but I am very unconfident.

If I were to have picked plays totally randomly I most likely (50%) would be much better than I am now. It seems that fate is against me here.

All constructive ideas, comments, opinions are welcome. .

Sounds like you are thinking it through though. I found that sports betting was VERY VERY unpredictable. Trying to cover spreads etc with so many crazy variables created streaks for me. I then shifted to horses and really applied myself to learn to handicap better. I make money on horses consistently with very low downside. I have my own way of betting which is not agreed upon by some guys here; however, I do well enough for my own needs. (I made about 3k in the last 2 weeks.)
Find a sport you are good in, practice your "capping" and good luck!!!!!

TheSunIsTheBeast,

It's a tough game. I recommend a few ideas: 1) trust nobody in the "recommendation" business unless you know them personally, 2) as sds states, start with a smaller base, 3) limit your wagers to smaller bets, 4) get to know a league or team (i.e., MAC in college football), and 5) don't bet on emotion.

If you enjoy the game, don't quit. Deposit a small amount and enjoy it for the pleasure of excitment. Getting your feet wet will allow you to move to the goal of "making money".

I think we have all been there at one time or another.
Use it as a learning experience.

All I can say and it wont get the $$ back.

Is gamble to HAVE FUN.
Not many people can do this for a living.
If you are doing this for enjoyment, watching the game and looking for some action, you make smarter decisions, not get an ulcer and ultimately dont agonize over each and every wager.

I have had my greatest success with a minimal amount of money to wager and my worst nightmares with a large bankroll.

We are the sum of our experiences.
Bet em and forget em.
Get a good nights sleep and wake up smiling.

Have Fun. Life is too short.

My advice would be to read up on your money management. I would recommend 1-2% bankroll per play. With a $4000 bankroll that means anywhere from $40-$80 per game. You could lose 50 bets in a row and still not go broke.

Don't chase and increase your wager size to make up. If you suck at capping, then you will never win and chasing will just bankrupt you faster. If you're good at capping, it still can hurt you cause no bet is a sure thing. Play all your bets the same size.

And read around the picks here in the forums. Don't follow anyone blindly, but there are a lot of good write ups here. You can see who you agree with and who you don't. Plenty of info and opinions floating around.

And you should always be looking for a reason to NOT make a bet. Same as in poker, you should always be looking for a reason to fold. IF you can't find one then you're probably alright to go ahead with it.

And some other quick tips: take advantage of bonuses, use reduced juice books where possible, and always shop for the best line. These three things will do wonders to your bottom line.

Good luck in the future man...

Good point Drunk,

When I started here and I wanted to wager some thoroughbreds out west, I found that Mazeltrick had some good picks that he posted. I used a few and made some money! That is why he posts them! Like Drunk said, do your homework. Look and see how the regulars here do (those that post picks) - maybe you can learn from them and/or make some money from the pick itself.
Good luck!

Sunisthebest,

First off, I know I am going to get fried by this forum for what I am about to say here. I dont care. Let them make all the remarks they want because one week from now I will be the one saying I told you so.

Normally I agree you should not chase, but this is a rare opportunity. I have a play for you that WILL win. No doubt about it. It WILL win. You need to sell you car, you computer ( you can call the play in ), ask your parents for an advance on next semesters tuition, pawn everything you own. I am NOT KIDDING man. Your job is to get hold of all the money you can and quickly before these lines go down.

Put everything on this play

Monkey Teaser ( 13 points)

Kansas City NFL + 3 1/2
New York Giants NFL + 2 1/2
Buffalo NFL + 15 1/2
Bowling Green CF + 28 1/2

Bet everything you can on this teaser and you WILL get your $3000 back and then some. This is -120 most places, so if you can get hold of $12,000 you can win $10,000. Also not every book takes these plays, make sure they offer 13 points teasers before you send money. I would suggest TCBets. This place takes them, they are safe and offer a decent bonus.

This teaser WILL win. You heard me correct. It WILL win. Sell whatever you can by tonights kickoff and have this play in. I will come back next monday morning to bask in the glow of this winner.

Do it man - CARPE DIEM Man.

LOL.

I do not know you Danny - can someone verify this guys credentials on this board??
But I would be very careful about a post like that one

That is a pretty serious suggestion that I would personally only take from a trusted source - or the outcome could be a second

Better Idea. YOU sell everything YOU own and bet it for ME. Then when it hits, you send me HALF of the profit since we are partners!

. I haven't the time to liquidate my assets on short notice so I am counting on you. Since it is guaranteed, no-miss, I am CERTAIN that you will oblige....right?
Hell, I will be happy with you depositing a paltry $500 in my horse account for me this evening
Whaddya say? you can keep the balance of our profits from your play!

cheers

Im too greedy for that. I am keeping all the profits for myself. I am giving you this winner for free. What you do with it is up to you. I am giving the kid a free 100% opportunity to turn his fortune around. Instead of being down $3000, he WILL be up $7000. I can lead you to water but I cant make you drink.

Leg 1 winner goes tonight all. This teaser WILL win.

I will be watching closely.
You being greedy as you put it makes no sense. You posted this 100% no fail gem to help out. Surely you could help out with the financing as well!!
icon_wink.gif
after all....it is NO RISK! You could advance it on a line of credit so it wouldn't interfere with your own cash flow! Now THAT is generous....and also STANDING BEHIND your suggestion to risk his entire freaking life on a "tip" from a STRANGER!

Danny, I literally can't believe you are posting this kind of thing - I never would have imagined you to give 'advice' like this.

As posted elsewere ...

yes - anyone following those instructions to the letter need to get help for compulsive gambling based on advice from ANYONE telling them to bet a 4 game teaser by dumping as much cash as you can find on it.

secondly, I don't care if a burning bush told me to take this play, I'd put the bush out with a hose and tell it to calm down.

Third, and most importantly, if it seems too good to be true, IT IS

There is absolutely nothing guaranteed in sports - absolutely nothing. A guarantee that does not include putting up the guarantor's money in escrow, to pay off those who lose, is no real guarantee - it is only an opinion.

Bottom line - use your head, Sunbeast - if someone is guaranteeing you a win, look away.

I'm going to re-post my original post, because it bears re-reading after the Cowboys incredibly improbable victory over the Giants tonight ...

Sitb,

Son, you are involved in a racket which has caused financial family ruin for thousands upon thousands of people. Others have also gotten in very deep, took a chance on one "get even" bet, lost again, then took their own life.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

99.999 % of EVERYONE who wagers on sports loses.

Some lose a little, others not so little.

You have entered an arena of "smoke and mirrors". Illusions are just the beginning. Sportsbetting is a very dangerous mine field and if you have not taken the time to properly prepare yourself, losing 3K in a week is just a drop in the bucket.

You can "jump out smart or jump out stupid".

Your choice.

If I were you, I'd humble myself and shout at the top of my lungs, "I have no idea of what the hell I'm doing and need some advice on what this racket is all about."

Your opponent in this game is extremely clever and from reading your post, you seem to measure up quite well as another easy target.

Get smart.

Gather information...and I don't mean on the next weeks matchups.

Answer this question....

What are the three aspects of sportsbetting and define each one?

You have a lot of homework to do before you make another wager.

Good luck.

SUN,

We are 1-0. Thanks for the PM that told me you are following this. We are 1-0 and dont worry we will get the last 3 plays. Count on it big guy. Sun, YOu have to ignore the negative remarks. They are from people who just love to bring others down. Dont worry Sun, when we win this think Sunday night they wont have sh*t to say.

Sun,
Last year I posted several Futures picks. They all ranged anywhere from -500 to -900. I got slammed by nearly every fool in this forum about how stupid it was to lay -700 or -800. Well guess what sun, after EVERY single won of those futures won the fools didnt say another word. Lmao. Typical. Yes it was about 8 or 9 futures and EVERY one of them won. Not a comment from the naysayers at that moment.

We will win this play sun. Dont even sweat it.
